A specific mental complex fundamentally rooted in hierarchical and inert modes of perception is, in essence, alien to any avant-garde pursuits. No matter how you look at it—East is East. And no matter how persistently the Eastern tradition was driven out over nearly a century, wherever you turn—there it is, alive and untouched. And thank God for that. For today, it is one of the few things that make us of interest to the world. ... What helps is the difference in how the West perceives the art of Russia and that of Asia: the same elemental “primitiveness,” but with a different set of coordinates, a different value system.
