Central Asia is terra incognita not only for those who don’t live here, have never been here, or have little idea of what Central Asia in general or Kazakhstan in particular actually is but also for us, who live here.

The place we inhabit is terra incognita, not so much in the spatial as in the temporal sense — it is the present. Art becomes a means of expressing this elusive present, a way of giving it meaning, whether rational or irrational to the extreme. It holds no mystery, but rather an alluring image — just as there is no real terra incognita left on Earth, only naive consumers of exoticism and calculating traditionalists staging a self-serving show for them.

And our artists are better known abroad than they are at home.

[Misiano] believed that contemporary art from the Central Asian region had matured to the point of being presented at a major international exhibition.
