Central Asian art: “the last mystery for the Western art world” (Thomas McEvilley).
… the exhibitions revealed the distinctiveness of the geopolitical, ecological, and cultural issues they addressed, emphasizing the fact that Central Asian art remains unintegrated into the global art scene, as both participants and curators were keenly aware that they are still perceived as “the last mystery.”
… in a paradoxical move, by clearly acknowledging the differences between the current post-Soviet spaces despite the obvious presence of various transgressions, curator Elena Sorokina dismantled not only the separateness of post-Soviet territories but also the “last mystery” of contemporary Central Asian art.
