An artist’s work is a dialogue. For some artists, it’s a dialogue with themselves; for a good artist, it’s a dialogue with the situation around them. And the situation speaks the language of violence.

Many of my mentors say I’m doing the wrong kind of work. That my art isn’t Kazakh. But do we even have institutions that decide what qualifies as Kazakh art and what doesn’t? One way or another, I’m always introduced as a Kazakh artist, and that’s a fact.
