The East almost always makes a striking impression in Europe. The contrast works. Although the East tends to shock the imagination of the meticulous European viewer — raised on stereotypes — Kipling’s famous words, “East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet,” do not hold true here, at least in the sense that art overcomes borders and expands the consciousness of the contemporary individual. And in this, contemporary art plays a tremendous role!
